    RETURN TO IN-STORE PLAY!

    RETURN TO IN-STORE PLAY!

    LET THE GAMES BEGIN!

[6/3/21]  The moment we’ve all been waiting for seems to have arrived. After a successful Memorial Day Weekend of events and with an abundance of caution, we feel more than ready to return to IN-STORE PLAY this month! We’ll ease back into it beginning with weekly Magic: the Gathering events, a new painting workshop and our Magic and D&D Day-Camps!

I must express my SINCERE gratitude to all the parents for allowing your kids to play with us throughout the last, most extraordinary year. Your kids are what keep all of us at the store going and give us purpose. Our type of store depends on community, AND YOU AND YOUR KIDS ARE ALL A PART OF IT. We hope they enjoyed playing online D&D with us and hopefully learned more about the game, strengthened bonds with a few friends, and helped keep themselves (and you) sane during this crazy year.

ONLINE D&D will continue on Sundays only while there is enough demand, and at the same online rates as before. These will be led by Dungeon Master Arthur. We are providing this for those who are not able to make the in-person D&D (distance, etc.). There is currently still space in his 12:30pm to 3pm session. Please call or email the shop to arrange dates and payment.

    SCHOOLS OUT FOR SUMMER!

JUNE 11, 2021: Last day of school today, so the kids walk down en masse from Ida B Wells (formerly Wilson) high school Rieke Elementary and get ice cream. A VERY long, rough two years since the last lineup like this, thanks to Covid. Dairy Hill Ice Cream is the bomb! And right next door to us in Hillsdale.

  • IN-PERSON DAY CAMPS

    IN-PERSON DAY CAMPS

We are so excited to return to our popular Magic and D&D Camps! Info is now available on the SUMMER CAMPS page as well as links for online payments.

Expect the summer schedule to be a little different than before, at least for the start. Magic camps will need to be a little smaller until more space becomes available. D&D will be quite different for those used to our online format. We are hoping to add a third D&D session at the 12pm to 2:30 time slot. Additional sessions may become available at the summer progresses. (TBD)

  • NEW KEANU REEVES COMIC, PEACH MOMOKO, SCOTT SNYDER, Ram V., more!

Big releases this week! March 3rd, 2021
We made it to March. It was one year ago this month when things started shutting down. We’ve adapted a lot. We’ve learned a lot. We’ve helped one another a lot. Let’s try not to lose our focus as we continue to emerge (hopefully) from the nightmare of the last 12 months.

Meanwhile, Comic writers have stayed busy over the last year and now the fruits of their quarantine labor begin to release this Spring. I’m practically giddy with anticipation for all the new titles this week. The comic’s world collectively has been waiting for several of these titles since they were first announced.

New titles include a new comic from actor/1st-time writer Keanu Reeves, also Scott Snyder (“legendary” writer), Peach Momoko (1st-time writer). Ram V (Swamp Thing #1) a few new King in Black titles, Sensational Wonder Woman, DC’s Infinite Frontier! Plus, ongoing Star Wars High Republic #3 and more!

I hope you are enjoying reading your comics as much as I am. During times like these, (which has actually never happened before in my life) we discover that comics (and reading) can be quite the essential break from reality.

    BRZRKR (BERZERKER) #1 (MR)

BOOM! STUDIOS (W) Matt Kindt, Keanu Reeves (A) Ron Garney (CA) Rafael Grampá

    * Discover the next blockbuster action franchise from the iconic KEANU REEVES in his Must Read comic book writing debut alongside New York Times best-selling co-writer Matt Kindt (Folklords, Bang!) and acclaimed artist Alessandro Vitti (Marvel’s Secret Warriors) in a brutally violent new series about one immortal warrior’s fight through the ages.* The man known only as Berzerker is half-mortal and half-God, cursed and compelled to violence…even at the sacrifice of his sanity.* But after wandering the world for centuries, Berzerker may have finally found a refuge – working for the U.S. government to fight the battles too violent and too dangerous for anyone else.* In exchange, Berzerker will be granted the one thing he desires – the truth about his endless blood-soaked existence… and how to end it.
NOTE: This is for Mature Readers

  • What a view!

    What a view!

[Dec. 14, 2020]   Happy December 14th! Here is the view this morning from Argentina! A beautiful, full solar eclipse, even watching it online was special. I KNEW there was a reason I came in to the shop at 6am this morning. (so I could watch this livestreaming) Move the slider to a few seconds before totality to see it in all it’s glory.

We know it is a difficult time for everyone deciding to go out of their homes. We encourage everyone to please visit our new shopping website to browse and purchase our items. Many new items are being added each week.

To protect ourselves as well as our customers, we are cleaning common surfaces regularly, wearing masks, and we have sanitation hand wipes for customers. If you do come in, we’ll be happy to see you, but please try and stay distant from us and from other customers during this very challenging time. We appreciate your consideration.

You know it’s officially shopping season when UPS starts getting regular delays.

If you do venture out in the evening, it is refreshing to see the Christmas lights up all around Hillsdale. They may brighten your mood as well as the shopping center. To me they are a reminder of happier times and show a stalwart refusal to allow the events of these times to keep us from enjoying our traditions.

We hope everyone enjoyed their smaller than usual Thanksgiving get-together. I spent the day with my son and his mother and their three dogs. We had a lovely traditional dinner, played Ticket to Ride (my favorite family board game, which Sawyer always wins)

If you are playing it safe and staying home these days, please give our NEW ONLINE STORE a visit. Shopping from home has never been so essential. Many items have recently been added with more going up each week. Place an order for curbside, walkin or neighborhood delivery. (please see delivery info below)

Our Hillsdale-Multnomah Village GOLDEN TICKET program has begun! Bring your ticket to Other Worlds Games for a 10% discount on most merch. (not including camps or booster boxes)

We still have our ongoing DECEMBER-SMORGASBORD SALE! Items on the table are now 40% OFF!

We plan to be open regular hours all days this week as long as we are allowed and able. Stay safe!

  • Thanksgiving/Small Business Saturday Weekend

    Thanksgiving/Small Business Saturday Weekend

[Nov. 30, 2020] Happy Monday Friends! First, THANK YOU to all of you who were able to go out and support Small Business Saturday at your favorite shops. We had a noticeable uptick in walkins and sales, not the same as previous years but that was expected. THANK YOU to everyone who could come in and make a purchase.

I certainly hope you are all staying safe and healthy. The daily Covid reports are all doom and gloom. I know there are more important things going on in the world than playing games and reading comics (alas!), and it seems like no end in sight to all the restrictions on our society right now, but it’s for the best, it’s for OUR protection and it IS keeping many of us ALIVE. Keep the faith and stay vigilant with our fight against this virus.

December begins tomorrow and to many, so does the holiday season in earnest. If you do venture out in the evening, it is refreshing to see the Christmas lights up all around Hillsdale. They may brighten your mood as well as the shopping center. To me they are a reminder of happier times and exhibit a stalwart refusal to allow the events of these times keep us from enjoying our traditions.

We hope everyone enjoyed their smaller than usual Thanksgiving get-together. I spent the day with my son and his mother and their three dogs. We had a lovely traditional dinner, played Ticket to Ride (my favorite family board game, which Sawyer always wins) and spent some time voicing the many things we are grateful for.

If you are playing it safe and staying home these days, give our MOST IMPRESSIVE, NEW ONLINE STORE! a chance. Many items have recently been added with more going up each week. You can place an order for curbside, walkin or neighborhood delivery.

Our Hillsdale-Multnomah Village GOLDEN TICKET program has begun! Bring your ticket to Other Worlds Games for a 10% discount on most merch. (not including camps or booster boxes)

We also have our ongoing CLEARANCE-SMORGASBORD SALE! Items on the table are now 40% OFF!

We plan to be open regular hours all days this week as long as we are allowed and able. Stay safe!

  • 5 REASONS TO START READING COMIC BOOKS

    Introduction

For some people, the word “nerd” might bring to mind images of a skinny teenage boy with braces and Coke-bottle glasses. The nerd was once a specific brand of social outcast: one who never talked to girls, did well in science class, and read comic books religiously. Well, I have news for you: the nerd is no more. Outcast boys have learned that there are also outcast girls, that being good at science is no longer something to be embarrassed about, and that reading comic books is something everyone can enjoy.

Still, not everyone has hopped on the comic book and graphic novel train. Some people don’t take comic books as seriously as they take other books, and most people don’t realize the benefits of reading these visual masterpieces. So, what are some of the benefits of reading comic books?

#1: Comic Books Help People Learn to Love Reading

Lots of people, especially young readers who are struggling to improve their reading skills, can benefit from the visual format of comic books and graphic novels. With their intense visuals and focus on plot and characters, comic books can be much more engaging than other literary media, such as novels or short stories.

Comic books may also help people develop the reading skills required to comprehend texts with higher levels of difficulty. When people read comic books, they learn how to process information differently, as we’ll explore in the following section. Further, comic books and graphic novels can help people learn information that they may otherwise find boring, such as stories from history or other educational information.

#2: Comic Books Help Us Think Differently

According to University of Windsor English professor Dale Jacobs (2007), comic books require readers to create meaning using “multiple modalities.” Readers of comic books must process all the different components—visual, spatial, and textual—of what they are reading and integrate these components into one solid understanding of the story. This means that, even though comic books may appeal to readers for the same reason these individuals are drawn to other forms of entertainment, such as television and video games, reading these books actually involves much more complex processing. More research remains to be done regarding the neurological benefits of reading comic books, but it is evident that there is far more to this genre than simply “looking at pictures,” as some critics of comic books believe.

#3: Stories May Be Good for Your Brain

No doubt you’ve been told that reading is good for you. Growing up, you were likely told that the more you read, the better a reader you would become. However, if you aren’t interested in being a good reader in the first place, this really isn’t much incentive to read more. But what if reading were good for more than just getting better at reading itself?

Neuroscientific research by Berns, Blaine, Prietula, and Pye (2013) indicates that reading stories actually has a noticeable effect on brain function. This study showed how reading a compelling novel changed participants’ neuron activity not only while they were reading but also for several days after they finished the novel that was assigned to them. Stories can actually change the ways in which our brains function and the ways in which we think—and tell me, what’s a more story-based medium than comic books?

    #4: Comic Books Are Cool

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Batman. Wolverine. Green Lantern. Superman. The Incredible Hulk. Men in Black. Captain America. The Fantastic Four. Iron Man. Spider-Man.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve likely heard of all of these characters. You’ve probably even seen most of their movies. You know why? Because superheroes are cool. And where do superheroes originate from? Comic books. If you enjoy big superhero blockbusters, such as The Avengers or The Dark Knight, there’s no reason you won’t enjoy the stories from whence these adaptations came. There is a whole culture to explore surrounding comic books and their adaptations; why not join the fun?

#5: Comic Books Are More than Just Superhero Stories

Okay, so maybe you’re not into superheroes. That’s fair. But did you know that you can read comic books and graphic novels about lots of other topics, too? There are tons of comic books out there sans evil villains or vats of toxic waste, such as the Scott Pilgrim series, The Walking DeadThe Sandman, and many more.

There are also tons of great graphic novels and graphic nonfiction books out there, such as Alison Bechdel’s autobiography, Fun Home; Marjane Satrapi’s Persepolis; and many more. Many of these stories, just like your favorite books, explore weighty themes and feelings. The visual nature of graphic novels allows you, as the reader, to experience these themes in different ways than you do when reading a traditional book. Don’t limit yourself to regular prose; explore everything the world of comic books and graphic novels has to offer. You probably won’t like everything you encounter, but then again, you don’t like all the books out there, either. You just have to explore and find what’s right for you!

  • Why it’s more important than ever to #ShopSmall this Small Business Saturday

Why it’s more important than ever to #ShopSmall this Small Business Saturday

This year has been like no other in recent memory. The Covid pandemic has impacted nearly everyone on the planet, and with profound, catastrophic loss of life. Our local economies have also been hugely impacted. Millions of people who had jobs a year ago now find themselves unemployed and stuck at home, while thousands of small businesses across America that were not able to pivot to the new challenges are no more.

As SW Portland’s friendly local game store, Other Worlds Games & Comics has in so many ways been very fortunate. In addition to the wonderful support from all our regular visitors, we have pivoted and pirouetted around so many industry-obstacles, from not being able to host in-store events and lower than average foot traffic to disruptions in our supply and distribution chain. Yet, we continue to go to work daily, with the store now open 7 days/week and with all the necessary safety protocols. Honestly, we are grateful to be busy.

However, we know this holiday season in particular will be very telling for so many neighborhood small businesses, even those who have so far withstood the challenges of this year. Including us.

For many small businesses this year, revenue is down significantly (over 30% for us from this point last year). Schools are out (which we depend on), we have fewer employees and foot traffic is not what we are used to.

The pandemic seems tailor-made for Amazon and other big online sellers. They are already showing BILLIONS in sales and profits, while we slug it out in the retail trenches, trying to do business the old-fashioned way. All that money going to Amazon means LESS for our local and state economy. LESS to hold on to our employees, LESS for our rent and utilities, and LESS for ordering the new products so many of you expect from us.

We ask that you please remember to support local shops BIG this year. Keep us in your thoughts, in business and in your neighborhoods. Keep as much of YOUR money in your local economy. The investment is well worth it, for all of us.

Thank you all for your continued support and please remember to thank any medical and first-responders you know during this extremely challenging time.

    Please be safe!
