    Greetings, Friends!

This week is the last week of school for local high school seniors. It’s bitter sweet for me as my son, Sawyer, will be graduating this Monday. After 7 years of attending nearby Robert Gray Middle and Ida B. Wells High Schools, Hillsdale will never be the same for me. I’m so used to seeing him out the back door with his lacrosse teams practicing after school. I’m so proud of him and hope he will remember all the fun times growing up here at the shop. I look forward to his next stage of life. ❤️

  • SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 27

THIS Saturday after Thanksgiving, November 27, is national SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY.

“The annual holiday shopping event puts small businesses across America front and center to celebrate the contribution of small businesses towards local economies and job creation.”

“Small Business Saturday’s is all about shopping small by encouraging customers to visit local businesses and support them during the holiday season.” -smallbiztrends.com

We will offer discounts on most merchandise in the store. Details coming soon!

In 2007 when I took over this pre-existing hole-in-the-wall business and switched the name to OTHER WORLDS, bringing my own energy and ideas, I never realized how much impact a single small business can have on a community.

After more than 14 years, I have seen thousands of visitors (literally) and have become friends with many of them. I have watched their kids grow and go off to college. I have also had the privilege to hire and work with so many in the community as well.

To hear how our store, our events and the products that we sell have impacted their lives, their families and their children’s lives, makes owning and working in a small business such as this even more rewarding. We are a community center, a safe haven and provide an often arcane but popular range of entertainment.

When you support any small business you are helping them stay open and to continue their relationships with their own communities and the effects they have on local families. You are helping them continue to HIRE local, to SPEND local and in our case, to offer a supportive community for youth and local schools.

I believe the Coivd-19 pandemic has further strengthened that bond. People have demonstrated, through their spending, how they truly support their local businesses and that they understand the importance of these stores in their communities.

As a small business owner, the least I can say is THANK YOU, but the most I can try to do is to STAY IN BUSINESS.

THANK YOU for supporting local! We hope to see you this weekend.

  • Update on Camps, Staff Pics, 8/5/21

Update on Camps, Staff Pics, 8/5/21

D&D Camps in full swing this first week of August. 18 kids!

    SUMMER CAMPS

In what seems a blur we have arrived at the last month of summer break, 2021. Our Magic/D&D camps have been filled with kids, their laughter and the lamentations of their opponents and enemies. (in game). Such a welcome contrast to how it went just a year ago.

This week and for only the second time this summer we have had all three of our fantastic Dungeon Masters running games at the same time. Fortunately, with the addition of the dividers and sound barriers, we are able to do this with ease and with little disruption to regular store operations. It’s fun to hear the different groups of players giggling, talking in-character or hacking their way thru monster encounters. Parents are probably hearing recaps of their kid’s daily adventures when they’re back at home. Of course, it wouldn’t be D&D without the sound of the occasional dice falling on the floor(!). The kids also seem to be enjoying the boost of carbs during snack breaks and when the elf food arrives.

Magic camps have been smaller but consistent this summer. They’ve been playing mostly with the new Magic set (Adventures in the Forgotten Realms), learning to play magic in different ways and of course making new friends. They may not realize it but they are often in the store, sometimes right after 9am, ready to play and engage their brains in all the math that’s often required to play this game. The reading level is above that of most of the kids in this game, but they seem to understand and are not daunted by all the brainwork. Because it’s FUN! All of this is facilitated almost effortlessly with our four exceptional camp counselors, each with an extensive history of playing magic and attending the camps themselves when they were younger. The counselors have made the camps more enjoyable for all of the kids as well as for us working the counter.

As we approach the 3 to 4 remaining weeks of this summer we have lots of scattered openings for both Magic and D&D. Magic is especially great for single-day or last minute drop-ins. If there is interest, we may extend both camps until Friday, September 3rd, instead of Tuesday, Aug 31st. This will be decided as we get closer to that week.

To sign up for Magic and D&D camps and for more general info, please visit our Summer Camps page.

I must again express my sincere gratitude to all of my excellent staff over this summer as we have navigated transitioning back to in-store play. THANK YOU also to everyone who has continued to support us. Your kids are what keep all of us at the store going and give us purpose. Our type of retail store depends on community AND YOU AND YOUR KIDS ARE ALL PART OF IT. Thank you!

Sincerely, Ron Connell – Owner, Other Worlds Games & Comics
