SUMMER CAMPS
In what seems a blur we have arrived at the last month of summer break, 2021. Our Magic/D&D camps have been filled with kids, their laughter and the lamentations of their opponents and enemies. (in game). Such a welcome contrast to how it went just a year ago.
This week and for only the second time this summer we have had all three of our fantastic Dungeon Masters running games at the same time. Fortunately, with the addition of the dividers and sound barriers, we are able to do this with ease and with little disruption to regular store operations. It’s fun to hear the different groups of players giggling, talking in-character or hacking their way thru monster encounters. Parents are probably hearing recaps of their kid’s daily adventures when they’re back at home. Of course, it wouldn’t be D&D without the sound of the occasional dice falling on the floor(!). The kids also seem to be enjoying the boost of carbs during snack breaks and when the elf food arrives.
Magic camps have been smaller but consistent this summer. They’ve been playing mostly with the new Magic set (Adventures in the Forgotten Realms), learning to play magic in different ways and of course making new friends. They may not realize it but they are often in the store, sometimes right after 9am, ready to play and engage their brains in all the math that’s often required to play this game. The reading level is above that of most of the kids in this game, but they seem to understand and are not daunted by all the brainwork. Because it’s FUN! All of this is facilitated almost effortlessly with our four exceptional camp counselors, each with an extensive history of playing magic and attending the camps themselves when they were younger. The counselors have made the camps more enjoyable for all of the kids as well as for us working the counter.
As we approach the 3 to 4 remaining weeks of this summer we have lots of scattered openings for both Magic and D&D. Magic is especially great for single-day or last minute drop-ins. If there is interest, we may extend both camps until Friday, September 3rd, instead of Tuesday, Aug 31st. This will be decided as we get closer to that week.

I must again express my sincere gratitude to all of my excellent staff over this summer as we have navigated transitioning back to in-store play. THANK YOU also to everyone who has continued to support us. Your kids are what keep all of us at the store going and give us purpose. Our type of retail store depends on community AND YOU AND YOUR KIDS ARE ALL PART OF IT. Thank you!
